Grades 5 through 12

Original Author: Jarrell, Wilmington
Every year on the first day of school I take every students photo. When we get to the Mulitmedia Unit or the Drawing and Graphics unit I have the students use PhotoPlus 6.0 by Serif to create a photo collage of themselves. The students use the selection/lasso tool to cut themselves out of the photo and then with the clipping on the clipboard they close the original and then open a blank image. On the blank image they paste the cut out and save it as photo 1. They repeat this at least 4 times. Then they open photo 1 and apply effects such as distort, pinch, solarize, emboss and or just color on themselves. Then they save the effects to photo 1. Then they repeat this for each of the 4 photos. The final step is opening the original photo and the 4 with effects. One by one cut each of the 4 with effects out and add them to the original in different directions, places etc. Then they have a creative collage of themselves. The students love this project.
Comments
Just practice first as it is a confusing project for the students. Please take it step by step with them.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
You could use any photographs...in Reading/Language Arts/Library you could use authors photos or book covers...in History you could use photos of Presidents or other influential people in history... any image can be manipulated into fun.
