Subject(s): English/Language Arts, Social Skills, Photography, Special Needs
Grades K through 2
School: Patterson Elementary School, Holly, MI
Planned By: Melissa Weimer
Original Author: Melissa Weimer, Davisburg
1. Take photos of children with their families during an open house or another time when families are at school. Encourage the children to give a hug to someone...like mom or dad.

2. Print out the photos.

3. Create a classbook using the photos. Have each child glue their photo on one page of the book. Include the word "hug" in a speech bubble on each page...just like in the book.

4. Additional text may be included on the pages of the book. For example: "I'm hugging my dad." or "Nolan is giving his mom a big hug."

5. Place completed pages and a front and back cover in plastic sheet protectors. Assemble all the children's pages of the book and bind them together with the covers.

Comments
Children really enjoy having this book in the classroom. It is comforting to be able to view photos of family members. This is especially helpful at the beginning of the school year when seperation from home can be difficulut for some young children. It is also a wonderful way to encourage early literacy skills and interest in books.
