Keywords: English, podcasts, poetry, literary terms, journalism, photography
Subject(s): English/Language Arts, Journalism, Photography, Podcasting
Grades 9 through 12
School: Alexander Central High School, Taylorsville, NC
Planned By: Dan Miller
Original Author: Dan Miller, Taylorsville
Working in groups of 2-4, students will choose one of the following podcast topics:

1) A poem or story we've read

2) A literary term

3) A sporting event

4) A local event

Once students have decided on their topic, they need to prepare a script to follow. Their script should include:

1) A greeting and an introduction to the group
2) An introduction to the topic/poet or story
3) Dramatic reading of poem/summary of story/definition of literary term/recap or highlights of event
4) Commentary on poem or story/examples of literary term and why it's used or effective/commentary on event
5) A conclusion that involves a final thought or food for thought

Students will rehearse their podcasts and then record them using a digital voice recorder.

Students will then create a storyboard in which they will lay out specific shots needed to support their audio podcast. (For events, it may be necessary to take pictures ahead of time and sort out the pictures during this step.)

Students will then elicit help as needed to stage their photos and take the necessary pictures.

Students will use their photos to add a visual layer to their podcasts. This can be achieved using Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, or other podcasting software.

Final products can be published on the web.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
English classes could work with history classes to recreate key events from history. Students could create a podcast for student art exhibits set up in concordance with the art teachers or drama teachers. Drama students may serve as models for the pictures.
Follow-Up
Have students view and comment on other podcasts.
