Lesson
Students will collect photos of appropriate plants and animals along the Kingsford Woods Nature Trail. Each group of 3 student team include a photographer, note taker and guide. Teams will be given a list of 15 suggested photo shots related to the ecological concepts studied in their textbook. The guides job will be to carry the list and direct each shot, whereas the note takers job will be to record the title, photo number, date, and time of day each photo is taken. Upon return to the classroom, photos will be downloaded to designated folders arranged on the commonY drive ( this will allow access by each person in the group including the instructor). The next class period will be devoted to researching and organizing their pictures into a PowerPoint presentation. Each group will be responsible for presenting their slide show to the class.
Suggested topics will include biotic and abiotic parts of the environment, adaptations, succession, populations and communities, ecosystems, habitats, and interactions. The following class period they will be given a lesson covering what they learned in the packet and completed as homework. The sections on adaptation and succession will be covered by a class discussion. Other topics covered will include the use of technology to collect information in science.
Comments
This activity is a great way to begin an enviromental ecology unit. We usually assign one student from each group to take a pond sample. This sample can be revisited later when we start our microscope unit.

Students with IEPs are given a modified worksheet with less writing and answers to choose from.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
ELA could be involved by providing writing skills training while students construct a written account of their photos as an item in their portfolio. Our local terrain has been influenced by glaciation and I had planned on involving Social Studies.
Follow-Up
Student teams present a slide show/power point featuring concepts from their unit.
