Original Author: Karoline Sharp, Chicago
Teacher present lesson on what geometry is and how it is applied in real life with an emphasis on geometric shapes in architecture and sculptures.
If you reside in a urban area this is a worthwhile project to do becuase of all the skyscrapers and outdoor artwork available or a fieldtrip to a sculpture park. This makes it possible for students to see how shapes are used and applied in other areas besides math. Students at this point can take pictures of their favorite art pieces as inpiration for their own sculptures.
Teacher invites members from the art community such as sculptors who can speak to the students about the work they do and the importance of geometric shapes in their work. While learning shapes and geometry students are to bring in recyclable materials to make sculptures with the condition that the shapes must all be made handmade. Agian at this point students can take pictures of their sculptures.
