Assign different types of shoots to help students see the differences in depth of field and motion blur for a particular lens and distance from the camera.
The topics will be as follows: 1. Desktop with the camera 10 feet away from the subject. 2. Camera lens at its shortest focal lenght, such as 28mm on a 28to 80mm lens. Subject to be about 10 and 20 feet from the camera. 3. Camera lens zoomed to 50mm. Subject to be about 10 and 20 feet from the camera. 4. Camera lens zoomed to its longest focal length, such as 80mm on a 28 to 80mm lens and the subject to be about 10 and 20 feet from the camera. 5. Landscape with the depth of field set at infinity as the farthest focal point, hyperfocal focusing. Subject to be 10 and 20 feet from the camera.
Each team will document and explain in their slide presentation the changes visible in the various exposures and clearly show the f/numbers and shutter speeds used.
Questions to be addressed in slide presentations: 1. What changes are clearly visible in using the different f/numbers at 10 and then at 20 feet? 2. What differents are visible when looking at the subject at 10 and then 20 feet? 3. Does the shutter speeds make a difference in stopping action or capturing motion blur? 4. Which image is the most appealing and what f/number - shutter speed combination was it taken at? Why is this particular image the most effective? |

The students will learn the most from the Digital SLR's and their experience with them will encourage them to get one of their own. The lenses of the SLR's permit more work with Depth of Field. If I were to win a grant I could post additonal lesson plans designed for the group shoot themes. |
Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
Physics of lenses. How digital cameras record images. Reflected light. Designing slide shows. |
Follow-Up |
Use the new knowledge to do a Nature assignment, Environmental Concerns assignment, Day in the Life of a Student project. Play of Shadow and Light Shoot. |
