Lesson: Portfolio

Students will create a portfolio of their work, utilizing technology with in the department. A CD of their work will enable students to bring forth to future employers and post secondary institutes a record of their hands on work. Many students with lack luster grades will begin to understand the importance of their work. Not only will they take with them at the end of the school year their report card and transcripts, but a valuable portfolio of their accomplishments throughout the school year.

Hardware/Software:

• Mobil Digital Camera Lab
• Tool Factory Word Processor

• Blank CD-R

• Teachers lap top

Time: ½ block, (50minutes)

NETS

• PI 2, S1,2
• PI 5, S 3,4

Task:

Students will take pictures of their hairstyles, nail designs and make up applications in before/after mode. A blank CD-R will be inserted into laptop, and students will download . They will create a file for themselves, and insert the picture, then transfer or burn onto the blank CD-R. Utilizing the Tool Factory Word Processer may be used to give the portfolio some interest and creativity.

Process:

Teacher will set up laptop and projector, and preview an already created portfolio. Review how each software is used and how to use hardware. This should generate an interest in students, and begin the creativity. Maybe take a few pictures of students, and demonstrate how to download and transfer via the projector.

Teacher notes:

Once a hairstyle has been achieved, student will set up a display of manikin/person and take photo. Preferably during open lab day. Teacher will keep their CD-R in file.

At the end of the school year, after Final Exams, students will access their CD-R, finish last minute details, create a label etc. and the class will view each students portfolio via projector. Administration will be invited.

Conclusion:

Students will gain the knowledge of technology use for their professional career. A sense of pride in ones self and others in the class will be acquired. Having the technology base in hand will be a valuable asset to students, and a tool they will take with them for life long learning.

Comments
Students really enjoy seeing their work, on the classroom projector. They also like to bring home photo's of their classroom projects. It really helps those who don't have much self esteem, for their peers to admire their work. In this day and age, students need to bring technology into their lives, and understand how it can help your career.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Students will be able to create 'how to' flyers with photo's as step by step instructions. Each unit would be able to be covered.
