Introduce the lesson by asking what is a good citizen. Assist students in knowing that good citizens help others in their community. Ask students if they know of any good citizens and how they showed that they were good citizens.

Show pictures and discuss briefly good citizens. The following are some examples: George Washington showed patriotism; Abraham Lincoln showed responsibility; Clara Barton showed compassion; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. showed fairness; Thomas Edison showed inventiveness; and policeofficers show community service.

Have students dress up like one of these good citizens. Take a digital picture of each student. Have each student write how he or she was a good citizen. Display the pictures and writing.

Have students roleplay being good citizens in the present day. Take digital pictures of the students. Have each student write telling how he or she is showing good citizenship. Display the pictures and the writing.

Catch students being good citizens by taking a digital picture of them whenever they help someone. Display all of the pictures on a bulletin board or in the hall. Challenge all of the students in the building to be good citizens.

Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Students can read biographies about good citizens and get pictures taken dressed up like the person in the book. Then students can write telling how the person was a good citizen.
Follow-Up
