There are currently over two hundred students enrolled in the journalism and photojournalism programs at Akins HS. These students will use the digital camera lab to capture the performances, artwork, and classroom activities of Akins Arts and Humanities academy students.
They will also train teachers and other students on the basics of photographic composition and lighting and digital image processing so Arts and Humanities teachers can check out the lab to document their activities in all subject areas.
The digital images will then be edited and archived by photojournalism students for later use in digital portfolios created by Arts and Humanities students.
At first 20-40 students will be selected to develop a digital portfolio. This will be a pilot project designed to study how to integrate these portfolios academy wide as a part of the academy's vision of developing an authentic, student centered, project and performance based curriculum that prepares students for post-secondary opportunities.
Feasability, assement structure, workflow, and professional standards will all be studied during this pilot project.
In addition, journalism and photojournalism students will create multimedia presentations higlighting the products, processes and performances of Arts and Humaities Academy students.
Images will also be considered for publication in the award winning school newspaper and yearbook and be entered into contests.
