Subject(s): Math, Technology, Photography
Grades 3 through 6
School: Southview Elementary School, Apple Valley, MN
Planned By: Jessica Krueger
Original Author: Jessica Krueger, Apple Valley
This lesson idea should be taught during or immediately after a unit on geometry.
Allow at least 3-4 weeks for students to complete the project.

In pairs, students will use the Mobile Camera Lab, or point-and-shoot cameras to find pictures around our school property that depict geometry concepts. They will find at least three pictures that support each of the following categories: lines, angles, shapes, symmetry and measurement. For example, students would find pictures showing parallel, intersecting and perpendicular lines. They might find perpendicular lines by looking at ceiling tiles, parallel lines in the way their desks are arranged and intersecting lines in the patterns in the carpeting.

The students will learn: how to use camera features such as zooming and flash, how to upload pictures onto to the computer and how to edit them using cropping tools, and by adjusting the photo quality.

Once students have selected their pictures and uploaded them onto their server folder, they will learn how to apply the pictures to their desired program. They can choose from a slide program, or comic creation program. They will then create a page that is dedicated to each of the geometry concepts being focused on.

Students will label their pictures with the appropriate geometrical terms and explain the concepts in their own words. They will then print their books in color and have them bound.

Once the entire class has finished their books, we will spend a day celebrating our hard work by sharing them with the class. We will discuss geometry and reflect over how the process of capturing pictures of math concepts from the world around us helped to develop a better understanding of geometry.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This lesson could be used throughout different grade levels and concepts. It could be used to do a State Study, Family History project or to create All About Me books. Students could also use it to create books on animals.
Follow-Up
You could choose to have students share their books with other classes who haven't yet studied geometry.
