Expected Student Outcomes: After the students complete this project, they will all be able to take good, usable photos for the yearbook. They will be able to budget time and money to get better pictures the first time instead of using several rolls of film and several days. They will be able to use PowerPoint to create a presentation. They will be able to use a digital camera and an SLR camera. They will develop oral presentation skills. They will learn to work with others and have various roles in groups. The following will be addressed: 1. Manages resources: Students will be required to budget the amount of film for samples and time they use on this project. 2. Interpersonal: Students will be working in groups, therefore, they will be required to work with others in many capacities. 3. Information: Students will use the internet and books to gather information about their specific topic. They will be required to interpret and evaluate this information and teach it to classmates. 4. Systems: They will take the knowledge they learn and apply it to the yearbook they produce. 5. Technology: Students will be working with digital cameras, scanners, memory sticks, printers, computers, software such as PowerPoint, CD writers and projectors.
Evaluation techniques and Standards for assessing attainment of competencies: Prior to the project, students will have a few writing assignments and tests over the camera, and vocabulary related to photography. Students will be evaluated several times through the project. They will be evaluated first on the storyboard of their presentation. Next, evaluation will be on the outline of their PowerPoint. They will be graded on their oral presentation. There will be a peer evaluation to determine how well they did in groups. Finally, they will be completing a worksheet during each presentation to show what they have learned.

Follow-up activities: There will be several things students will do through the course of the school year using their skills: 1. Students will take photos of various things for the yearbook. 2. Students will use photos on a school website. 3. Students will be able to make contact with photographers for valuable opinions and ideas. 4. Students will be able to take photos for the local newspaper. 5. The possibility of job-shadowing is also there.
Projected timeline: This project will take about 10 days to complete. Day 1: 1. Introduce students to an SLR camera. 2. Student will learn how to set up camera, load film and focus. 3. Present students with a list of vocabulary words associated with photography. 4. Read pages 323-337 in Scholastic Journalism text. 5. Complete homework assignment with vocabulary terms and labeling camera. Day 2: 1. Review parts of camera and vocabulary terms. 2. Discuss Digital Cameras, how to set them up and how to use them 3. In the school gym, students will learn where to stand and how to focus on indoor action shots. (Handout with images) 4. Students will practice indoor action shots with partners using both types of cameras. 5. Upon returning to class, discuss digital images and talk about adjustments needed. 6. Homework: Recollect what we did in class and write a how to about action shots indoors. Day 3: 1. Review of indoor actions shots, parts of camera and vocabulary terms. 2. Outside, students will learn how to take photos of soccer, track, cross country, baseball, and softball. (Handout with images/ info) 3. Using both types of cameras, students will practice with partners. 4. Upon returning to class we will look over the digital images and discuss the photos, adjustments needed, etc. 5. Students will write a brief how to about one of the outdoor action shots they learned today. 6. Tomorrow- Test over the parts of a camera and vocabulary terms. Day 4: 1. Quick review 2. Test over camera and vocabulary. 3. Review of how to do action shots. 4. Begin discussion of people shots, candid photos, academic shots and shots that are more “fun” (Handout with info) 5. In groups, students will go around the school and take photos of kids in class. They will use both types of cameras. 6. Return to class and discuss the digital images. 7. Tonight, make a list of pictures you would like to see in the yearbook and what procedures you have to take to get them. Day 5: 1. Review of how to take photos. 2. Look at some of the negatives that have been processed and discuss some of the things that could have been done or that made it a successful image. 3. Show Student made PowerPoint. 4. Begin telling kids about PowerPoint. (Use computer Lab) 5. Divide kids into groups. They will draw from a hat what type of photo (basketball, baseball, candid, etc.) they are to use. (Handout will be provided with the criteria for the presentation) Show rubric 6. Students will begin brainstorming session about how they can develop their presentation. 7. Allow students to check internet sources for information (provide handout with ideas to save time) Day 6: 1. Review of PowerPoint. 2. Present students with rubric and go over grading procedures. 3. Partners will begin storyboard of their presentation. They may use internet images instead of their own. If they choose to use own, they will need to check out cameras. All internet images must have proper documentation. 4. Evaluation of storyboard 5. Students will work on the presentation. Day 7 and Day 8: 1. Work on presentation. Day 9: 1. Presentations to class (student evaluations as well as teacher evaluation). Day 10: 1. Complete presentations (depending on class size- this could be done in one day and part of the activities from day 10 can be started on day 9)
