Keywords: Spanish Preschool Songs, Adjusted for Special Needs
Subject(s): Technology, Foreign Language, Social Skills, Music, Photography, Podcasting, Special Needs
Grades P-K through 5
School: Keller Elementary School, Green Bay, WI
Planned By: Anne M.R. Martin
Original Author: Anne M. R. Martin,
Activity: For each academic theme(appoximately every two weeks), students will learn a new song which will be recorded, illustrated, and sent home for practice/fun language learning. Songs will be repetitive in nature so that students disabilities (Ex: Developmental Apraxia of Speech, Down's Syndrome, Memory Delays, Language Expression/Comprehension Delays, and Auditory Processing Delays, and etc.) will be able to sing along to some or all of each song. Pauses will also be used so that students have think time in order to verbally participate in song. For example, when singing "The Wheels on the Bus", there would be a pause after "The Wheels on the Bus" go ........waiting for student responses. Students will be able to pose and be photographed/videoed for actions within the songs. When students and their classmates take part, the verbalizations tend to increase as well as their memory. Then bi-weekly website posting will be made so that parents can watch/download our songs from the internet.
Comments
Spanish Preschool Songs are available but most are so fast paced that my students just sit and listen. Besides, family use, I need to create songs that an English speaking Early Childhood Teacher can use with my Spanish speaking students. Most currently recorded songs are just not appropriate for my clientele.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Thematic-based songs will be created...and used at home as well as at school (Speech Therapy & Early Childhood Environments)
Follow-Up
Once students have been exposed to the song/theme vocabulary in their dominant language, the students will then hear the English equivalents. This will help our students retain their Spanish as well as acquire/maintain their English Language Learning.
