Keywords: Beginning Sounds
Subject(s): English/Language Arts
Grades K through 1
School: South Lincoln Elem School, Alliance, OH
Planned By: Jones
Original Author: Jones, Alliance
Set:

(I will take pictures of objects and words that begin with the "s" sound and some that do not. I will create a PowerPoint with the pictures. I will group 3 pictures of objects that begin with the "s" sound with 2 that do not in a random order. Under the pictures that begin with the "s" sound I will put a smiley face, and I will put a frowny face under the pictures that do not begin with the same sound. I will repeat this procedure two more times to have 3 groups of 5 pictures.)

1) I will tell the students that we are going to watch a slideshow of pictures, and that each of the pictures is going to have a happy or sad face underneath.

2) I will tell the students that I will show them a group of slides, and they should try to determine what the pattern is.

3) I will show the students the groups of slides. After each group, we will pause. The students will make guesses about what the pattern is.

4) I will tell the students that the pictures with the happy faces all have the same beginning sound, and that was the pattern.

5) I will tell the students that they are going to be using a digital camera throughout the week to take pictures of words and objects in our classroom that begin with our special sound.

Presentation:

1) I will tell the students that this week we are studying the letter "Ss."

2) I will tell the students that "s" says /s/. The students will practice with me.

3) We will sing the "s" song with lots of "s" words in it.

4) I will tell the students that during literacy centers this week, they will have the opportunity to take pictures of objects/words that begin with the /s/ sound.

5) I will tell the students that with the cameras they will be "Reading Around the Room."

6) We will brainstorm things of which to take pictures.

7) We will talk about how to use the camera and the way to treat it.

Application:

1) 4 students per day will use the camera to "Read Around the Room."

2) They will take pictures of as many things as they can find that begin with the /s/ sound.

Closure:

1) I will load all the pictures into a PowerPoint presentation with the students names.

2) On Friday, we will watch the presentation and view all the photos of objects and words that begin with /s/.

3) I will tell the students that next week we will be working with a new letter and sound.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Photos of the objects could be printed and laminated. Students would use the photos to sort into different student-generate categories (i.e. food items, animals, school supplies, etc.)
Follow-Up
Photos of the objects/words could be printed and compiled into our classes Alphabet Book.
