Keywords: Documentary, Persuasion
Subject(s): English/Language Arts, Technology, Music, Photography
Grades 6 through 12
School: Kendall Valley Elementary School, New London, NC
Planned By: Ashley Bullock
Original Author: Ashley Bullock, New London
Prior to this lesson, we studied persuasive writing including advertising and propaganda. At the end of the unit my students completed this project.

In groups students will:
1. Write a plan to convince "the school board" to give us more funding for technology to make our classrooms technologically equal. Brainstorm ideas for their films.
2. Gather data: survey students about technology, photograph (digital cameras) or videotape (digital video cameras) various classrooms, interview teachers or students, etc. This step takes several days because they must request permission to video/photograph by writing letters to teachers and schedule appointments to do so. They must write surveys, interview questions, letters, etc.
3. Create a storyboard with visuals (photos and video), text, and audio (music, narration).
4. Using editing/movie software, students will create films to support the position that we need more money for technology.

Comments
This lesson plan was created to provide "collateral materials" for a grant I wrote. If you find something they care about, they will get excited!
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Current Events: this plan can be adapted to fit any topic of importance to the "student world" (i.e. school uniforms, changes in school policies, graduation requirements).
Follow-Up
I had some principals evaluate them for persuasive techniques and rate them. The students also got to evaluate their peers for strengths and weaknesses.
Materials: Mobile Labs, Video Editing, Camera Bags, xD Memory Cards, Digital Voice Recorders, Flash/USB Drives, Batteries
