Early Childhood Education I students are learning about how to teach in child care and elementary school classes. They intern in classes 3 days a week assisting teachers and students.
In this language arts lesson, students will have their children take pictures around their classrooms and school. Kindergarten children will take pictures of the staff, especially the cafeteria, maintenance, custodial, front office, and adminstration staff. First through 3rd grades will take pictures of their favorite place in the school.
After my students print the picture, kindergarteners will frame them, put the person's name and their job on the frame and hang them in the room so that they can become familiar with them and speak to them using their names. Later, each staff member will be invited into the classroom to talk about their job and the children will draw pictures and dictate or write a sentence about the person.
After the pictures are printed for the 1st through 3rd grade students, they will be asked to write a paragraph about why this place is their favorite. They will attach the pictures to their writing and read them to their classmates.
These lessons will be directed by the Early Childhood Education students in collaboration with their internship site teachers. They will reinforce both their observation skills and their writing skills. For the kindergarten children especially, it will give them a better understanding and appreciation of all the people who are involved with making their school a special place to be. |
