When we study selective breeding in science we actually use purebred dog guides to choose two dogs to breed(and we have cat books for the cat lovers). We study each type of dog/cat and their characteristics. We then use science vocabulary and digital pictures of dogs to create posters of the offspring of mixed dogs/cats and their characteristic traits (inherited and acquired). We write the inherited traits of each dog and what type of qualities the dogs/cats possess. Each day we work on our dog study we review proper care of pets. We have mini pop quizzes and review how we treat animals. We also have a huge bulletin board of our pets that we have a contest called "Match the Owner," using digital pictures of owner and dog. It is always fun to see how they match.
Students become knowledgeable on the proper care of animals and it is surprising how much they share. The hall is full of our posters that educate others. These posters are very popular and many students can be found in the hall reading them. Sometimes their bathroom breaks end up a little too long during this time, but it’s worth it.
Every year we have numerous support activities. Extra credit is always given to attend the Detroit Dog Show and then come back and report what they saw to the class. Much is shared about the proper training of animals. The class becomes bonded and strong discussions are brought about concerning the proper treatment of animals. They become united in a mission to become educated on animals and how to treat them. We have had PAWS for a Cause speakers come in and speak about service animals. During March is Reading Month we host a PAWS to Read activity.
We carry our studies over into language arts and write stories to our pets, and pet care guides. We also complete a service project in which we raise funds for the local shelter. Our posters of cross-breeds help promote the adoptable qualities of shelter pets. Meadows students become advocates for animals and write letters to the editor of our paper about local animal issues. Students become very tied to these issues and write for a purpose.
The care and respect for animals carries throughout the year at Meadows Upper Elementary School. Each year students come up with more ideas to protect and save animals. They also learn to share their knowledge and are proud to come up with ways to teach others to care for animals properly.
Humane education not only focuses on animals, but it focuses on students. When you teach students to care for animals and about animals you learn about the kids. Each day we speak about caring for animals I get the inside view on how the children themselves are cared for. |
