Keywords: Butterflies, Birds, Habitats
Subject(s): English/Language Arts, Science, Photography, Information Skills
Grades 4 through 6
School: East Amwell Twp Elem School, Ringoes, NJ
Planned By: Sharon Ernst
Original Author: Sharon Ernst, Ringoes
Prior to this focus study- Students would have had to have prior knowledge on habitats and why it is important to generate and create habitats- Perhaps teacher can teach about fish, reptile, or amphibian habitats- (In my classroomI have all three animal types and was able to teach this prior to creating an outdoor habitat

Day 1-4
Students will begin by researching plants in groups that are used to attract butterflies and birds into a garden habitat.

Students will begin to take notes on the research that they are finding on the internet.

Groups will decide on a particular plants, butterfly, and bird species to research and describe-explaining what they need to create this habitat.

Teacher makes sure not to overlap the butterflies, birds, and plants

Day 5-8

Students will synthesize the information that they found by organizing it into paragraphs or a script. This will be taken from their notes and print out information. Teacher can provide various graphic organizers for the students to fill out or provide post-it notes for note taking on important facts on planting and maintaining the plants for specific butterflies/birds.

Students decide on a format of presentation- Powerpoint, Web Page, IMovie, Photo Show, etc.

Students begin to create their presentations

Day 9-11
Students rehearse their presentations as they will be presenting to other classrooms and PTO/Board of Ed. to persuade the community to support the creation of this particular habitat.

Day 11+-

Students will hopefully persuade your school or members in the community to donate plants for attracting native species. Once the garden has been established or modified (my school just needs to add more plants) students can begin to observe the garden and take photographs to then continue to create a visual diary of the garden process.
Comments
This lesson plan is for the school that has a supportive community that could quite possibly donate all the plants needed. Also the school would need and existing garden bed to cut down on the costs.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Creating a Colonial Herb Garden because some grade level will be learning about the Coloists.

Math- measuerement and charting the plant growth.
Follow-Up
Visual Diary of the Garden- Especially if their is larva- students can photograph the stages of growth

For birds this could also work- the stages of growth
