Procedure.
Grades2-3
1.Discuss the history of your local area. Mobile ,Al where I live is full of history .Ifind that kids understand history better if you can make it come alive.
2.Introduce the lesson by discussing the United states history briefly. Limit the period you are discussing.Discuss how history influences us today - specifically- food,clothes,housing,etc..
3.Introduce local history.
4.Ask students what they know about local history .
( If possible a field trip of some historic sites is recommended.) If you can't go on a field trip get brochures from local historic attractions.
5. Discuss the historic sites anmd their significance.
6. Assign each child a site or sites . They are to create a brochure convincing ppeople to visit a specific location.They must gives facts about the location and have pictures or illustrations,
7.The lessons will culminate with the students presenting their brochure and the class playing tourist and deciding which would be the most interesting place to visit.

Follow-Up
Pen pals with students in other areas. Visit museums. Research family history. Create a landmark map. Discuss landforms and how they affect who settles in an area.
