Grades 3 through 12
School: Edythe & Lloyd Katz Elem Sch, Las Vegas, NV
Planned By: Cynthia Burkes
Original Author: Cynthia Burkes, Las Vegas
Objective: Students will be able to acquire language skills while developing a pride in their heritage.

Teacher will read books to students that deal with moving to a new place, cultural customs, and successful people of minority heritage. The teacher will help students understand the commonalities of these book and how they relate to the students' lives.

Students will check out a point and shoot camera, Xd card, and camera bag, and take photos of things that inspire them at home, school, or in their community.
Students will download the photos to the computer, then share their photos with their table groups, discussing why they took that photo, what it means to them, and how it depicts a certain aspect of their life.

Using their pictures as a guide, students will begin a rough draft of their book as the teacher models good writing traits writing a book about what inspires him/her. (For me, this is my students.)

Students will peer edit their table partner's book. Once the students have taken their book through the writing process, the teacher will instruct the students how to edit their pictures and insert them in the book.

These books will be published by the school in the yearly book publishing project.
