Expository writing and interpretation. Students participate in school announcements, as a vehicle for informational writing, practice verbal interpretation of scripts, voice development, fluency, listening skills, and public speaking.
Students have the opportunity to write and read morning announcements to the student body. Students are paired and work together to create an organized and interesting script with the information received from the school office. They work on delivery of information so that it is audible and meaningful to the audience. They concentrate on pacing, voice inflection, and being conversational. Students are given the freedom to ad-lib fun comments and even sound effects. They even have to read announcements that arrive late (sometimes while they are live).
The idea is to help students create and refine a verbal presence while learning how to interpret information. They learn how to cooperate and help each other if one reader stumbles or isn't loud enough. They have to work as a team to present the announcements with accuracy and flair.
As an assessment, students are critiqued by the teacher and their peers. Once each student has completed two daily announcements, they have the oopportunity to continue to read as a school service. |
