As in every guided reading lesson, vocabulary and metaphorical phrases are introduced.
Prior knowledge is activated through questioning and discourse.
Students are given a script and assigned a speaking part.
The first read-through is a guided reading where the teacher stops to model "good reader" strategies.
After the read-through, students and teacher discuss the character roles and make inferences as to the type of character, the character's mannerisms, and the role of the character in the story.
Students choose a new role for the next read-throughs.
After several read-thoughs to make the reading smooth, inflections accurate, and students confident, the students record the podcast.
For the video component, several illustration from the text is recorded to correspond to the narration.
After editing, the podcast is placed on the class website.
Students share, in small groups, the podcast with other grade levels, family, and friends.

The podcasts can be used in all content areas.
Follow-Up
