A second grade classroom of about 30 students will be divided into 10 groups of 3 each. Students need to learn to work together cooperatively to complete project based learning assignments. Each group will be allowed to go out to the school playground with the assignment of photographing some bugs and their habitats. A digital camera wil be provided for each group. The following limitations will be understood:
(1) Allow all 3 participants in your group to each take 5 picutres - 15 total. (2) Stop, think, make each picture the best it can be - teamwork is the key. (3) Include picture of bug, it's food and it's house if possible.

After photography is completed, students will meet in the school computer lab. Picutres will we downloaded to the computers and students may then choose which bug they will use for their group project. Through guided research, the children can learn the proper name of their bug and several important facts about the insect. Using powerpoint or photostory, a short presentation (5 slide maximum) will be made to share with the rest of the class. The final part of this project will be to actually present the bug stories to the rest of their classmates. This will take place in the library using the SmartBoard and projector.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
The cameras will be stored in the media center to be checked out by the teacher for the whole class to use.
