Students are to find a point of view that is important to their life. I give examples of places they spend a lot of time in- their homes, a coffee shop, a studio, their car, etc.
We look at the video "David Hockney as Photographer" which shows the process the artist uses to create his montages. Usually it is something very mundane but seems profound when created as montage. We look at his images online and in his books.
The students are asked to take at least 24 pictures, but the more pictures taken the better the effect. They choose a point in their scene to stand in and shoot away being sure to cover the entire area, from sky to feet. I think it is important to capture part of themselves in the picture so it is like we are seeing through their eyes into their world.
They have the pictures developed or print them. We put them together on top of a piece of poster board which usually takes the entire class period. Adding more poster where needed.
We hang them up around the room and discuss the importance of place in their world.
Comments
You may need to budget in paper and ink for printing or have students have pictures printed. Personally it's a lot cheaper just going to the hour photo lab.
