*Students interview family members (and others) and ask them to “name the 5 geometric figures that they feel the world could not live without.” *Students individually created graphs representing the responses they received. As a class tally the responses to come up with a class list / data base of the “Ten Most Wanted Geometric Shapes.” *Discuss the purpose (background) of Wanted Posters and have your class decided what items are most important to include on their posters such as the shape’s picture, definition, and important terms (for the circle that could include center, radius, diameter, and circumference). Including the shapes' occupations can add to the fun. *The students use digital camera to "capture" the item of a geometric shape and then print the image and create a wanted poster for that shape. *The other students will enjoy investigating to discover where the picture was taken (which may be then listed on the poster as the last place the shape was seen). * This activity helps students recognize mathematics as part of their daily life and to apply earlier class lessons regarding the properties of various geometric shapes into a unique format that demonstrates the development of their understandings. *This assignment can be used to analyze students’ growth in conceptual understandings, as well as, the acquisition of skills and processes (including technology skills.) |
