Geometry Walk Page Views: 778

During our geometry unit, students get hands-on practice at identification, manipulation, and publishing of geometric principles and figures.
We take a checklist of all the geometry vocabulary and shapes that we have been studying and do a Geometry Walk around our campus. Because our school is an open building, the walk has to be very quiet, so students use their looking skills to find examples of geometric shapes and principles, such as octogons and angles, all over the building. Students work in small teams to try to identify the shapes and photograph them in ways that make the geometric shape or figure evident to others. The goal is to check off all the shapes/principles on the checklist without having to ask for assistance to find the shapes from the teacher or another team.
After the geometry walk, the photos are downloaded onto the classroom computer and students choose the best examples of each concept. Then photos are printed, placed onto a teaching poster, labeled, and then published on the class bulletin boards in the hallway.
The Geometry Walk is always a big hit and helps our class and others who visit our boards to see geometry in real-life action around us! |

Students use my personal camera, which requires a wait time as they share this single resource. Having more than one camera would make this activity much easier, and would make it easier to adapt for other activities/curricula. |
