The lesson plan would cover the following North Carolina Standards. Goal 1: The learner will develop and apply enabling strategies and skills to read and write. Goal 3: The learner will make connections through the use of oral language, written language and media technology. Goal 4: The learner will apply strategies and skills to create oral, written, and visual texts. Goal 5: The learner will apply grammar and language conventions to communicate effectively. We would like to adopt some soldiers and write letters to them. This will enable us to teach writing skills and allow us to communicate with the soldiers who would benefit from receiving letters from the classroom. The project would serve twenty first grade students. The students we teach rarely get to travel to neighboring communities. The opportunity to write to the soldiers over seas would allow them to think about the world at large rather than just their community. We would like to start the project around Christmas thus making cards and start sending letters just in time for Christmas. We would like to continue the project until the end of the year. The project is a hands on project that will aid in the process of teaching them writing skills. The cameras will help the students and military persons to put a picture with their words. The students will take ownership for their learning and the skills they will learn through this project will help them for years to come. At the end of the project we would like to make a t-shirt for the soldiers and send it to them.
