The ELA program we use in first grade is composed of ten themes. Each theme is three weeks long. Each theme has a different concept to focus on. Theme Three is titled "Lets Look Around" in this theme students focus on what they see outdoors in every day life.

For this lesson plan a period of three weeks is given to complete the acitvity.

Students will work with a partner and walk around the school to take pictures of
what they see when they look around.

Students will choose their top ten pictures and write captions describing the pictures.

When the pictures and writing are complete students will form a book titled: Lets Look Around.

These books will be done on cardstock paper and laminated.

Students will then be able to share the book with classmates and family memebers.

This activity can be repeated throught the school year in our ELA program and always focusing on a different theme.

This picture book activity will allow students to tie in the current theme we are in with everyday life experiences. Students will enjoy and understand the reading themes even more.
