Main Idea:

The Virginia SOL states that the students will know both the accomplishments and motivations of Christopher Columbus, Christopher Newport, Juan Ponce de Leon, and Jacque Cartier.

Objectives:

The students will demonstrate through animated movies, both the accomplishments and motivations of the explorers.

Actiivites:

Please note that this lesson comes at the end of the Explorers unit and that they will have already have gathered the information needed.

1) The students will be divided into 4 groups, one for each explorer.

2) The students, using the information they have on the explorers, will draw pictures and use clay to illustrate their accomplishments and motivations.

3) They will take pictures of the illustrations using digital cameras on tripods.

4) Then the students will write a script to go along with the illustration and record them on Garage Band. They will be able to add music if they want too.

5) Using iMovie and Garage Band, they will create their animated movies.

6) The movies/podcasts will be shared with the class on a SMART Board or iBeam.

Assessment:

Assessment will take place through the use of a rubric which looks at information included, how the students worked as part of a group, and the finished project.
Comments
The children learn by listening, reading, AND Hands on projects.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This project not only deals with Social Studies, but also writing, ttechnology, and art.
Follow-Up
We will use the animated movies/podcasts for review. We will make many more.
