MATHEMATICS COMMUNITY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES

Goals/Objectives:

Students, through library, internet, and personal contact resources, will research real-world applications of math and science. Small groups will collaborate to plan the content, timeline, and style of their math video.
Students will explain the extensive examples of mathematics in their every day life.
Students will choose an appropriate multimedia tool and prepare a video presentation of their evolving concept of mathematics in their lives.
Students will improve their ability to communicate mathematical ideas.

Activities:

Activity One:
Small groups research available math videos for possible examples to model. Each group submits the file (or file address) of at least three (3) recommended videos suitable for math class. Each video must include a written description.

Activity Two:
Each group selects the music for their math video. The music is submitted in digital form. Printed lyrics and artist information must accompany the music.

Activity Three:
Each group plans the video scenes needed for their project. A written storyboard or outline of the planned locations and content is submitted.

Activity Four:
Each group records the video component of their project. The video file is edited and combined with the music. Their production is presented to the class.

Activity Five:
Each group participates in Mathematics Community Night at the Movies. Groups introduce their video to the audience. Each group will be responsible for an assigned duty. Each student arranges attendance by friends and family.

A. Selecting the Music

1) Students research sources of music for possible inclusion in the final group video. Each student submits at least one (1) song with the information requested below.

2) Each music selection must be accompanied by an attached original lyrics sheet.

3) Each submission must include lyrics modifications demonstrating a math or science connection.

Suggested sources include: library, personal collection, and internet.

This grant is necessary to expand a successful project completed by a limited number of math groups.
