"Categorical Calling" is a project designed to assist students with receptive and expressive language deficits to correctly identify and name items in various categories.

The ultimate goal of this project is to incorporate competency goals from the North Carolina Standard Course of Study with goals developed from each student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP). For example, language therapy for a kindergarten student would consist of targeting competency goal #2 to "make a conncection through the use of oral language, written language, media, and technology" as well as targeting an IEP goal of naming and identifying items in categories with 90% accuracy.

Both targeted goals would be an effort to increase a child's receptive and expressive language skills. This could be achieved by taking real life pictures of items found in the classroom, cafateria, playground. The children as well as the speech-language pathologist could take the pictures of items across the school environment. In language therapy, the speech-language pathologist would utilize these pictures as a therapy tool which would assist the child in achieving their standard course of study goals and their IEP goals.

Ongoing data will be collected during each child's therapy session. Progress will be measured by informal testing, data collection, and observation of student's responses.
