Self-Advocacy Social Studies- 7th – 12th Grade Duration- 4 weeks Objectives:
As a result of this unit’s lessons, special education students will become aware of their rights as students and citizens, and become self advocates in order to facilitate their transition into inclusive settings.
Materials
Art supplies – such as color paper, glue, scissors, and poster boards Digital camera Digital video camera Digital video cassettes
Activities:
• Create a class bulletin board outlining students’ rights and responsibilities • Define their exceptionality and determine how their exceptionality affects them • Use subscription databases and other electronic resources to research exceptionality • Identify and research information on role-models that have their same exceptionality • Complete a multimedia project outlining what self-advocacy means, what it entails in practice, how it affects educational experiences and outcomes, and list role-models that have conquered their exceptionality using multimedia video and pictures completed by the students
Assessment:
1. Teacher portfolio and rubric assessment of multimedia project outlining what self-advocacy means, what it entails in practice, how it affects educational experiences and outcomes, and lists information on role-models that have conquered their exceptionality.
2. Students will recognize educational strategies that accommodate their educational needs as determined by a rubric assessment of their work.
Home Learning
