Reader’s theater is an efficient and effective way to present literature in dramatic form. By researching and writing reader's theater scripts, the students integrate language arts and social studies.

South Carolina Social Studies Standard 5-3:

The student will demonstrate an understanding of major domestic and foreign developments that contributed to the United States’ becoming a world power.
Indicators:
5-3.1 Explain how the Industrial Revolution was furthered by new inventions and technologies, including new methods of mass production and transportation and the invention of the light bulb, the telegraph, and the telephone. (E, H)

5-3.2 Identify prominent inventors and scientists of the period and summarize their inventions or discoveries, including Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, the Wright Brothers, and Albert Einstein. (H)

South Carolina Writing Standards
Developing Written Communications
Standard 5-4
The student will create written work that has a clear focus,
sufficient detail, coherent organization, effective use of voice, and
correct use of the conventions of written Standard American English

Standard 5-5
The student will write for a variety of purposes and audiences

Step 1
Students work in collaborative groups and research the assigned inventor/s. Reports should include biographical information about the inventor, facts about the invention or discovery, and the impact of the invention or discovery.

Step 2
Using their research findings, students compile and publish their information using Tool Factory Workshop word processor.

Step 3
Students write a reader's theater script to illustrate the life of their inventor, their discovery and the historical impact.

Step 4
Students perform their reader's theater for the class and visitors. All plays are video taped using the Flip Video camera. It is then uploaded for viewing by others on our web page.

Comments
I tried this lesson earlier this year. I was amazed at the wonderful interaction and involvement of the students. This lesson would be much more effective, and have even more student involvement with better word processing software and the Flip Video camera.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
I attempt to integrate subjects on a daily basis. Reading, writing, and social studies are naturally linked and easy to integrate. By writing, producing and taping their reader's theater plays, the students internalize the information, rather than learning it for a test and then forgetting it.
Follow-Up
Other students viewing the videos can reply to the plays by writing a response.
Students can also self-assess themselves and produce more scripts on later social studies topics.
