Keywords: storytelling, Journal writing, reflective writing, English
Subject(s): English/Language Arts, Reading, Technology, Writing, Grammar, Spelling
Grade 12
School: Cooley High School, Detroit, MI
Planned By: Candace Lee
Original Author: Suzanne Carter, Etiwanda
Beginning the first day of school, students would be given cameras to document the happenings of their senior year. These seniors are remedial students who, for the most part, have not yet passed the California High School Exit Exam in English. Most need the extra support in writing.

At-risk students write better when they can see a picture, and having them document their daily dealings at school, home, work, or wherever they are will help to open the writing floodgates.

This activity will also allow students to create mini-documentaries about their lives. English teachers know that daily writing is essential to high school success. The pictures will help facilitate the writing. By the end of the 1st semester, students will have compiled a daily journal accompanied with a picture and hopefully will have successfully passed the CAHSEE with all the writing practice.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
