7th Grade [2008-2009]
PowerPoint project involving research about President Obama’s Agenda via www.whitehouse.gov.
The students were assigned various categories within President Obama’s Agenda:
Civil Rights, Defense, Disabilities, Economy, Education, Energy and Environment, Family, Foreign Policy, Health Care, Homeland Security, Immigration, Iraq, Poverty, Seniors and Social Security, Service, Taxes, Technology, Urban Policy, Veterans, Women.
They were required to read, research and understand their respective categories to begin to transform the Web information into PowerPoint presentations, which were given in front of an audience [classmates, teacher, principal].
This process has a “double whammy” effect in which the students learned about the U.S. Government and President Obama’s Agenda for the nation as they honed their presentation skills via PowerPoint.
It was noted with the students that President Obama might very well ask some of his staff members to do the same … make PowerPoint presentations … to be able to deliver his Agenda at various meetings within the communities. So, the students paralleled a vocational activity that exists within society to give information to an audience.
Since these same students wrote compositions:
www.tomrchambers.com/obama.html
to support Obama’s candidacy during the Presidential election, copies of these compositions were sent to Obama’s campaign headquarters in Chicago, Illinois, and a thank you letter:
www.tomrchambers.com/OBAMA_LETTER.pdf
from Obama was received at Raul Yzaguirre School For Success, the completed and edited PowerPoint presentations will be sent to President Obama at the Whitehouse to indicate the students’ continued interest in his Agenda.
The combined effect of the support compositions and the Agenda presentations may very well lead to a visit by President Obama to Raul Yzaguirre School For Success to meet these students who support him and take an interest in his Agenda … what better way to bring government to education.
