P & P- " Portraits and Persepctive" Digital Photography for Kids

Objective: Students in grades 2-3 will use digital cameras to learn about portraits and perspective. This 3 day project will allow students to explore the school grounds using perspective techniques to create interesting architectural and portraiture photographs.

Guided Instruction: Credentialed teacher will model for student small groups the basics of a digital camera. Teacher will walk students through the process of perspecitve-taking photos from below, above, along the side of buildings and playground equipment.

Teacher will model the added component of taking each others portraits using the same angles, children faces from above, from below and from the side angles.

Teacher will model for children how to use red eye, flash for fill lighting and how to avoid glare and shadows on faces. Teacher will model how to avoid sillouhette shots using the correct back and front lighting techniques.

Teacher will model for students how to print their photos. Students will print their photos.

Teacher will model for children spatial relations in layout design for bulletin board display.

Assessment: Children will caption their photos, explain the process and give their photos a creative title. Children's photos will be displayed on a bulletin board with their captions and descriptions in a public area of the school.

Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Language Arts: writing skills, oral presentations. Math: perspective and spatial relations, lines and angles. Science light and reflective qualities.
Follow-Up
Children will make oral presentations to classes on what they learned about digital photography/printing/light/perspective
