Overview: Students will be assigned a major event from World War II and be required to create a 30 second to 1 minute iMovie newsreel of the event.

Objectives: Students will be able to describe the causes and course of World War II. (National Standards for US History (5-12), Era 8, Standard 3A, B, & C). Students demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of iMovie. (Technology Foundation Standards for Students, Standard 1). Students use iMovie to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity. (Technology Foundation Standards for Students, Standard 3).

Materials/ Sources: Students will be given a handout by the teacher describing the event they are assigned, such as the Yalta Conference, and the Battle of the Bulge. Students will also have access to the textbook. The teacher will provide the students with a storyboard (Keren-Kolb, 2006), iMovie tutorial handout (Keren-Kolb), camera, and laptop (with iMovie software). Students will bring in their own props.

Assessment: Student work will be graded based on teacher created rubric.

Instructional Sequence:
Day 1:
1. Students will be broken up into pre-assigned groups with a pre-assigned topic.
2. Once students are in their groups the teacher will give them a handout with directions on how to complete the project as well as a handout about their specific event. Students will be given 10 minutes to read over the handout.
3. Each group will be given a storyboard and 20 minutes to plan out their video using the storyboard (see attached). During this time students will also need to make a list of props they will bring to class for filming.
4. Teacher will approve each storyboard so that students may begin filming immediately the next day.

Day 2:
1. Teacher will check out the cameras to each group.
2. Groups will be given 45 minutes to film their video on the school grounds. During this time the teacher will monitor groups around the school grounds.
3. After the allotted 45 minutes students will return to class and return the cameras. The teacher will keep the cameras and tapes for editing the next day.

Day 3:
1. Teacher will check out the cameras and laptops to the students.
2. Teacher will provide students with a handout on how to use iMovie. The teacher will also walk students through uploading their video and the editing tools.
3. Groups will be given 50 minutes to edit their videos and write a brief one page summary on the significance of their event.
4. Teacher will download videos to their computer at the end of the day and show all videos the next day.
5. Projects will be graded based on teacher created rubric.

Follow-Up
This is the final activity in my World War II unit. In addition to this project students will also be given an objective test.
