Keywords: Science Inquiry, Blog,
Subject(s): Special Needs, Writing, Photography, Science, Math
Grades 9 through 12
School: Professional Learning Institute, Milwaukee, WI
Planned By: Tanya
Original Author: Tanya , Milwaukee
State Standard: Science C1 Follow directions to complete basic steps of science inquiry.

Process:
Students will brainstorm a science activity to complete (growing plants, burning a candle, measure how far people can jump, etc). During the activity they will photograph each step of what they are doing so that someone else would be able to recreate what they did. Then they will upload the pictures to a classroom blog where they would journal about each step of the activity. They must answer what did they do, what did they see, what did they use, and what happened?

If there are enough supplies, have multiple groups pick different activities. Once the activities are up on the blog, have each group pick an activity that is not their own and try to recreate what the original group did by following the blog. Then have this group provide feedback to the first group (via e-mail) on how well they did communicating their ideas.

Then following feedback (through peers or from teacher), have each group present their blog to the class.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
The blog and presentation connect to English, the experiment itself is a science activity, most science activities involve measurement which relates to math, and you could have the students look up the history behind a certain component of their experiment for their final presentation.
Follow-Up
In future activities have them add to their blog on new science activities they have done.
