Grades 6 through 12
School: Silverado Middle School, Roseville, CA
Planned By: Lisa Stanley
Original Author: Lisa Stanley, Roseville
After watching a presentation on the effects of world hunger, students will listen to a recorded Podcast message from a USDA/World Hunger Year (WHY) representative and will be challenged to answer a call that pleads with them to research and collect data on methods that countries around the globe are using to address the universal problem of world hunger. Students will research the epidemic of world hunger and investigate the methods that many countries use to address this global problem. Students will be assigned countries in groups of no more than three. Each group will be challenged to become experts on their countries and the methods that their society utilizes to deal with hunger in their nation. As data is collected, students will record their findings, organize their information, and present their results through a multi-media presentation to their peers/colleagues. Once all data has been presented, students will analyze all findings and determine the country that is best suited to serve as a collective model for dealing with the epidemic of world hunger. Once a country has been determined, students will explore the techniques of advertising and persuasion. Students will then apply these techniques by creating a radio commercial advertising their selected country and its attributes that make it an ideal model for addressing the hunger crisis.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
In the area of Science, students will look at the agricultural techniques of their selected countries and, through their study of plants in life science, grow a variety of plants under a variety of conditions to determine what agricultural process might best serve to solve the food production element that plagues some of the countries suffering from issues of hunger.
Follow-Up
Students will listen to Podcasting commercials and select the one they feel has the best persuasive techniques and is most likely to convince the USDA and President of the United States. In the future, students may post their Podcasts onto a website of their design that highlights the problem of world hunger, the causes, what other countries are doing to address it, and what students can do to help address the dilemma.
