“Color Poems”

Instructional Objectives/Expected Student Outcome:
TSWBAT:
-make meaningful connections between Art, Language Arts, and Technology.
-gain experience working in a variety of media.
-deepen one’s understanding of the art element color.
-develop one’s imagination.
-create an original poem masterpiece!

Materials & Resources: poems on color, paper, pencils, a variety of art materials (paint, tissue paper, markers, crayons, glitter, etc.), scanner, computer publishing program, color printer.

Procedures/ Art Production: The class has been listening to and sharing poetry throughout the school year. Students will work on a multidisciplinary project, producing their own poems/artworks. Color will be the theme. The teacher will share several poems about color such as “What is Red?” by Mary O’Neill, “Yellow” by Olive Dove, “What is Pink?” by Christina Rossetti, “Colors Crackle, Colors Roar” by Pat Mora, etc…Students will engage in brainstorming. Each student will ultimately choose one special color to focus on and will write an original poem based on that color, using related words and phrases which evoke feelings and impressions. The art part of the project will involve creating a multimedia piece to match each poem. Paint, colored tissue paper, markers, crayons, etc. will be available for students to experiment with. Their goal will be to create an abstract background in their chosen color- an artwork inspired by or reflective of their poem with no recognizable subject matter. The teacher will help to scan these artworks and save them in bitmap form. This will enable the class to import the scanned works into a desktop publishing program. Then students can open their scanned work and type their poem into the body of their artwork!


Evaluation Criteria: General Grading Rubric- Effort/Participation, Craftsmanship/Care Taken, Creativity/Originality, Group Cooperation/Attitude.
