The notes of a pentatonic* (do-re-mi-sol-la-do'or C-D-E-G-A-C') scale will be designated by dot on a die (do=1, re=2, mi=3, sol=4, la=5, do'=6).
Students will roll their die 32 times plotting each roll graph paper. Following the graph, the students will sing, then play, the melody on a melodic classroom instrument such as a xylophone, recorder or piano. After "practice time", the tunes will be performed for the class.
With the music teacher's help, the graphs will be notated into standard music notation in 4/4 time (Each tone will be considered a quarter note. There will be 4 notes per measure for a total of 8 measures.)
Completed melodies will be recorded and linked to the teacher's webpage along with a photo of the composer.

*Using a PENTATONIC SCALE is crucial to this activity as the pentatonic scale has no strong musical "pull" to a home tone which allows the melody to begin/end and progress through any scale tones and still sound pleasing to the musical ear. |
Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
Music- melodic contour, composition, meter, notation, form
Math - graphing melodic contour, form
Language Arts - creating song lyrics, syllable, accent, form, meter |
Follow-Up |
To extend, melodies can be combined in various "standard" musical forms: ABA, AABA, or rondo ABACA and/or students can add lyrics using one tone for each word syllable with the accented syllable on the first of each group of 4 tones.
