Goal- Students will identify the people working in their school community by identifying positions, names and job descriptions of people throughout their school building. (ex: nurse, lunchroom staff, security, librian, gym teachers etc......
1 In coming kindergarten students will be introduced to their school and the staff who are available to help them in their learning experience. Kindergarten students are naturally curious and eager to meet new people.
2 Communication skills and pragmatic skills will be taught , reinforced and demonstrated through out the process.
*Process-
Students will identify people who are in the building to help.
Students will create a list of the people and their names.
Students will speak with staff and discuss their position in the school and how each person helps children.
Students will gather data and images about each particular person.
students will work together to create a profile of each person, their name and their job description.
Students will organize information to create a photo story/ book introducing the people in the school and their position.
Follow-Up
This activity could be co-authored with a first grade class to focus on the community part of the social studies curriculum.
