Keywords: brochure, California, persuasive writing
Subject(s): Technology, Geography, Writing, English/Language Arts, Spelling, Grammar
Grades 4 through 5
School: Glassell Park Elem School, Los Angeles, CA
Planned By: Maria Shepherd
Original Author: Maria Shepherd, Los Angeles
1. Students will review persuasive writing, accessing their prior knowledge. Students will also be given different travel brochures to see how they are written, focusing on how the authors use persuasion.
2. Students will review the different regions of California. Focusing on the four main regions and the details specific to each region.
3. Students will go to the computer lab to do research on their specific region. Teacher will lead the students through internet research, ensuring that they are familiar with the different search engines, and exposing the students to more "kid friendly" websites. Teacher may have pre-selected websites if the students are having a hard time finding the information on their own.
4. Students will create outlines that include the information they may use in their brochures. Students may review the sample brochures to see what types of information is used.
5. Once students have all the research done the teacher will begin showing them how to create a brochure using the Microsoft Word program.
6. The teacher will lead the students in creating a three-fold brochure. This is best done step-by-step in the beginning. Although the process is not difficult, the students may have a hard time with multiple step directions, especially if the students are second language learners.
7. Once the students understand how to create the first section they are encouraged to finish the project on their own. The teacher will make detailed directions available explaining how to navigate from one column to the next.
8. As the students create their brochures they are encouraged to insert pictures and clip art to make their information even more persuasive.
9. Students are reminded to use spell check and reread their writing before the submit their finished project.
10. Students will email finished project as an attachment to the teacher.
Comments
This project works best in the computer lab with a projector, it is much easier to have the entire class go step-by-step than teach the skill to each student individually.
