After reading several nonfiction selections on Lewis & Clark (I used a story in our reading book and a lesson from our social studies book), explain that you are going to discover what it was like to have traveled across our country, exploring the new, unknown territory.

Arrange students into groups of 4. If any groups are smaller than 4, try to find a student willing to take on two roles. Explain the procedures for the upcoming webquest into the journey of Lewis & Clark/ Have groups choose roles - botanist, zoologist, topographer, and Indian Affairs expert.

My students accessed the website Adventure into the Unknown... A WebQuest on the Lewis and Clark Expedition found oline. There are several very good webquests online for Lewis & Clark, or you can create your own. Explain that they will follow the directions within the webquest. As students progress through the webquest, they will keep notes in a journal to be used later in writing a podcast

Once students have completed the webquest, and journaled about their part of the "trip", they will choose a host for their internet show. The host will assist their members in creating a podcast script in which ALL members write a section based on the notes they took from their research during the webquest of the previous lesson. Once the scripts are written and approved by the teacher, then students will practice reading their parts fluently and then record them onto the computer using a microphone and the program Audacity. Whether you choose to host the podcasts online, or have a podcast party in which you have snacks and drinks while listening to everyone's podcasts, is up to you.
Comments
My students really enjoyed doing this. It took about 1 week of 30 minute sessions to complete.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This was a crossover activity that I used to tie a story in our reading book into the current social studies lesson on the exploration of the Louisiana Purchase.
