Materials:
Digital cameras, batteries, memory cards, pictures of the past (families, schools, jobs, and technology), glue, Now and Then book for each student.

Review and Introduction:
In history, first grade students compare life from long ago to life today. They learn about families, schools, jobs, and technology from long ago and then compare it to today. The students will also take a field trip to learn about life long ago.

Procedure:
Each student will make their own Long Ago and Today Book. The books will consist of 10 pages. 5 pages will show what clothing, homes, schools, chores and technology was like long ago. The other 5 pages will be show pictures that the students have taken of what clothing, homes, schools, chores and technology look like today.
1. The students will learn about families from long ago. They will read and look at pictures of the different types of homes people had long ago. The students will cut out pictures to glue on their page homes from long ago. The students will then work in groups of two and take pictures of the types of homes people have today. They will glue these pictures on their next page homes today.
2. The students will read and look at pictures of the different types of clothing people wore long ago. The students will cut out pictures to glue on their page clothing from long ago. The students will then work in groups of two and take pictures of the types of clothing people wear today to glue on their next page clothing today.
3. The students will read and look at pictures of the different chores that people did long ago. The students will cut out pictures to glue on their page chores from long ago. The students will then work in groups of two and take pictures of the types of chores people do today to glue on their next page homes today.
4. The students will read and look at pictures of the schools that students went to long ago. The students will cut out pictures of old schools to glue on their page schools from long ago. The students will then work in groups of two and take pictures of their school to glue on their next page schools today.
5. The students will read and look at pictures of technology that was used long ago. The students will cut out pictures of technology to glue on their page technology from long ago. The students will then work in groups of two and take pictures of the technology that they use to glue on their next page technology today.
6. The students will then go on a field trip to see an old farmhouse, clothing, log cabin, general store and a one-room school house where they will spend some time in class using slates and McGuffey Readers to learn their lessons. The students will work in groups of two using the cameras to take pictures to add to their Long Ago and Today Book.
7. The students will share their books and what they have learned with their 4th grade buddy.
