Keywords: Digital Storytelling
Subject(s): English/Language Arts, Art, Technology, Photography, Podcasting, Special Needs
Grades 4 through 5
School: French Creek Elementary School, , PA
Planned By: Ann Marie Lucas
Original Author: Ann Marie Lucas,
Procedure:Using Photostory explain to the students that you will show them a story you created following the elements of a story. Show them how you used a concept map to plan out your story and then took the pictures and built the story around those pictures. Show the rubric that will be used to assess their completed work. Go over this rubric to check for understanding.

1. Then give the students their digital cameras with the instructions that they are to tell a story and capture that story with the cameras.
2. Using Kidspiration the students can brainstorm using concept maps to think through the elements of their story including: main idea, beginning, middle, end, characters, setting, solution, and problem.)
3. Allow the students to go out and take the pictures around the school and at home.
4. Bring them back to the classroom and allow them to take their digital images and put them on the computer.
5. Allow them to lay out their pictures on PhotoStory for Windows. (Tutorial/lesson in using this program was previously completed).
6. Have the students decide the layout of their pictures and write the story to go along with these pictures.

Closing: The last component is the share. Have the student's digital record themselves reading their story to podcast it on our moodle page. They will also be able to share their Photostory layouts by saving them to PDA's that can be shared with others and viewed over and over again.

Assessment: Use the teacher created rubric to score and comment on each students photstory creation.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
These tools can be used in all curriculur areas for the students to take charge of their learning and record what they are doing to playback and remember. With special needs learners I find repetition and motivating to be key to memory retention. These tools allow this to occur.
Follow-Up
The students will write other stories using this format. They could do informational pieces and narrative and persuasive essays using the digital storytelling medium.
