The fifth grade students are challenged to organize and maintain a daily podcast . They will work in collaborative teams to script podcast segments, schedule interviews, plan daily show content, and produce a daily program for our school.

The desired outcome is:

Students learn the technical skills needed to record a high-quality podcast.

Students brainstorm, and design the themes and content of their Podcast with teacher guidance.

Students complete pre-production, production, and post-production of their Podcast.

In order for the outcome to be met the students will follow these steps:

1. Review computer skills and software needed for production process.
2. Define the purpose of the Podcast during a class meeting.
3. Organize students to participate by having students apply for positions by writing letters of application.
4. Brainstorm potential segments for the Podcast with students (upcoming events, interviews, lunch menu and birthday announcements, book reviews, this week in history, etc.)
5. Student class leaders ("producers") will divide up topics to students for content/script production.
6. Produce rough scripts with students.
7. Practice recording the content several times.
8. Record the Podcast content using digital voice recorders and noise reducing microphones.
9. Edit recording with podcasting software.
10.Post content to Internet classroom blog.
11.Advertise Podcast availability to peers and parents.

Students will use a rubric format from 1 - 4 to score themselves and peers on the following:
Participate actively in assigned segment and production.
Work collaboratively and positively.

Grade level standards to be evaluated will be based on a rubric scale of 1 - 4:
Demonstrates basic computer skills and is able to complete Podcasting tasks after learning the recording/editing process from the teacher.
Participate fully in all areas of the Podcast production process including script writing and public speaking.
Successfully complete their assigned segment of the Podcast.

Cross-Curriculum Ideas
The podcasting equipment and skills will also be integrated into the other curriculum areas so that the students will be using technology to support their learning in science as a culminating project for the Human Body Systems unit and in social studies/language arts to produce readers theater.
