During this semester the students will be studying Ancient Egypt. To take this lesson plan from the text books and into the world of technology the students will be put into groups and create their own music videos of the original song "Walk Like an Egyptian". During the first week, the students will re-write the lyrics to be educational and record their version of the song using music software and microphones on their classroom computers. The second week they will design their set and create a storyboard for their music video. The third week the groups will each have 3 days to film their videos using FLIP cameras and FLIP share software. Once they have finished filming the students will work as groups in the computer lab to edit their videos using the video editing software. They will have three days during the fourth week to complete their editing. Lastly on week 5 the students will present their videos to their classmates and there will be a vote on the most popular, most educational, and most creative videos.
Comments
This past school year was the first time I attempted this lesson plan and it was a huge success. The students really enjoyed themselves and learned a lot in the process. Allowing them to be creative and use the technology they love hands on taught them not only about the subject matter, but how to work as groups, time management, and a great deal about technology.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
You could pair this lesson plan with the music department and have them create and record educational songs that pertain to current school subjects while the classes create the accompanying music video.
Follow-Up
In follow up you can have a mini film fest and have the other student critique their peers work. This will show them what they did vs. what could have been done to take it to the next level.
