Teva is the Hebrew word for nature. Through a variety of structured activities, students gain knowledge of the relationship between the wonders of nature and Jewish practices of Tikkun Olam, (healing the world). Simultaneously, students strengthen their own self esteem and independence. They participate in both day and evening projects where earth science, plant and animal life lessons culminate in an understanding of not only scientific and environmental significance, but of important Jewish tenants. As they work in small groups, students will document the planning, progress, process, and product of each project. Students will participate in a Group Challenge Course where brain storming and problem solving techniques engage students in finding better environmental solutions for today’s ecological challenges. Upon return to school, students further extend their learning through journaling, slide shows and oral presentations. By spending 4 days outdoors, in nature enriched surroundings, students come away with excitement and appreciation for our natural world as well as with an extended knowledge base that integrates Judaism into all aspects of this engagement. Once back on SSDS premises, students will download their digital photos onto the school’s server so all 5th grade students have access to each others pictures and can begin editing in a digital imaging program. They will create their brochures and slide shows utilizing Tool Factory Workshop and Multimedia Lab V to be presented to an audience of 4th graders. Their brochures will be displayed throughout the school for parents and students to share. Discussions will include the wonders of nature, science, and Judaism, with an underlying premise that all are connected as witnessed through the medium of photography. In addition, to further extend their learning, students will research environmental organizations to investigate how their class can help improve and protect the neighborhood surroundings. |
