Lesson Plan: preview vocabulary Reading 3rd Grade "Officer Buckle" Harcourt Trophies Vocabulary words: department, obeys, commands, audience expression, accident, & noticed

Procedure: Show model video, assign groups (no more than 3 students to a group), assign vocabulary words to groups. Students are to create a 3 minute video giving definitions of vocabulary words (2 words per group). Students may use unitedstreaming clips, film their own video, powerpoint slides, other resources. Procedure (continued) students will have 30 minutes for three days to produce video. Video’s will be graded by rubric (see below). Teachers (ESE Inclusion & Regular Ed) are available as a facilitators. Students will be guided to open programs/web sites, conduct internet searches, save projects and burn CD’s as necessary. Projects will be viewed whole group, discussion includes compare/contrast when some assigned words are duplicated.
Handout: (all students get entire handout, assigned words will be circled for each group; there will be duplication).
Vocabulary words: Department: Part of a larger organization that has a special purpose. "The city government has a police department." "The Target Store has a Toy Department."
Obeys: To do what one is told to do.
Commands: Orders, instructions.
Expression: The look on one’s face that shows how one feels.
Accident: Something that happens without being planned; an event that is unexpected.
Noticed: To see, to become aware of something.
Rubric: 10 points Word is defined on a Powerpoint slide (10 pts per word)Video example of definition/word. (10 pts per word) Video non/example of definition/word (10 pts per word) More than one example or non-example (10 pts per word) In depth discussion, question, or visual of concept (10 pts) Opening Title that explains video (10 pts) Titles that explains video clips (10 pts) Narration that explains visuals (10 pts) Narration is clear and audible & Titles legible End credits list all sources (10 pts) Transitions (10 pts) Clips are right length (10 pts) Music that is right volume (10 pts) Music/sound effects that helps the meaning (10 pts) Video is correct length (between 3 and 5 minutes long including credits) (10 pts)
