Through this grant, I will use the digital camera to motivate my Kindergarteners to promote writing by using photos of themselves, their classmates and other activities. They will create journals or books to capture a year of memories!
Providing an encouraging environment should begin in kindergarten and develop throughout an entire school career. For beginning school-age children, “writing” is conveying their ideas by using pictures. Pictures actually serve as a rehearsal for writing. They provide a framework for putting thoughts and ideas into words.
Throughout the year, children will begin to experiment with letters to represent words or sounds. My job is to encourage this experimentation and to convey to my children the idea that their marks on paper do represent meaning. I will have them read what they have written.
If you are like I am, you find it easier to write when you have all of your tools at hand and conditions are just right. Pictures are truly worth a thousand words!
Digital photos will include their first day at school, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Day 100, Pajama Party Day, Clifford's birthday, Read Across America and many, many more special days.
With this approach, my children by the end of Kindergarten, will be making books and journals of their own writing — captions or even complete sentences about the pictures, and all stapled together into a volume like a real book. These books will prove to hold a year of visual memories!
